5 Totally Free Things Moms Actually Want for Mother’s Day From a Mom of a Teen
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be all about expensive gift cards. As a mom of a teenage son, I can tell you we don’t need you to spend a dime to make us feel loved. What do we really want? A little thought, effort, and a few moments that remind us you actually still like us (even if you're too cool to admit it). I won't say no to breakfast in bed, please don't try to reuse an old card. Yes, that has happened to me.
1. A Clean Room Without Being Asked
It would be a Christmas miracle to see your room clean. No eye rolls. No reminders. Just a surprise clean-up that shows maturity and responsibility. Or perhaps take your dirty clothes downstairs, There is no washer in the hallway.
2. An Hour of Uninterrupted Time Together
One hour. No phones. No friends. Just you and Mom — maybe a walk, an ice cream chat, or binging a show. These small moments mean more than any spa day.
3. A Handwritten Letter
Teen boys, listen up: nothing melts a mom’s heart faster than your actual handwriting. Tell her what you love or appreciate about her. Bonus points for a funny memory. We will also accept a typed letter since you aren't used to using paper.
4. Take Over One of Her Chores
Vacuum the house. Fold the laundry. Make dinner or tell your dad to help you get takeout. (I know that's cheating, but we'll count it). Do something she normally does, and do it well. It shows love without spending money.
5. A Social Media Shoutout
If you’re brave enough post a photo or a reel with your mom and say something nice. It’s modern, free, and public… which is kind of priceless. Now, I realize this will result in mom jokes, but I'll survive.
Kids, just remember it’s not about the price tag. Moms want to feel noticed, valued, and appreciated. And for us moms of teenagers? These simple, free gestures mean the world. Oh, and don't forget that Mother's Day is Sunday, May 11.
