Here in Owensboro, Kentucky, we're all kind of shaking our heads about the rapid passage of time as we prepare for the first day of city schools. That happens on August 7th. Daviess County Public Schools will return on August 12th.

While that sounds like an early start time, we've grown accustomed to it, even though many of us started school much later in August, if not in September, when we were young.

Early Start to School in Indiana

So, you can color me shocked when I saw a Facebook post wishing everyone a happy first day back at school...today. That's right...July. When I was in first grade, the school year ended on the second or third day of June. Outside of that occurrence, I've always assumed that July is the one month kids would never be in school. You can now also color me wrong.

At first, I thought, "Well, okay, they're getting a jump on the well wishes," and then I clicked the link and learned that it was a "jump" after all.

When Are the Earliest Start Times for Indiana Schools?

Eight school systems within Marion County, Indiana (Indianapolis is the county seat) will have had their first day of classes by July 31st. Nine others in Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, and Shelby Counties will have also done the same thing.

It took some sifting, but I found some information from News From the States that indicates these unusually early start times (which are nothing new in 2025) may be happening because educators "saw learning loss from the long summer." Others say it's because of the 180-day instructional requirement.

Whatever the case may be, there are Indiana kids who are already back at their desks. Can you imagine preparing for a big exam with more than a month left of summer? I can't, but thousands of students can and are probably used to it by now.
