Last night, I watched Woman of the Hour, the new Netflix movie about Rodney Alcala, who appeared on The Dating Game in 1978 right in the middle of his murder spree. I know the '70s and '80s were a different time—people picked up hitchhikers, for crying out loud!

Alcala would befriend women, asking to photograph them before taking them to remote spots where he would commit horrific acts. Daniel Zovatto did an incredible job portraying Alcala’s charm and down-to-earth demeanor, only to reveal the sinister side that could turn deadly.

Alcala wasn’t the only serial killer who used charm and the “nice guy” persona to lure victims. Watching Mindhunter, which chronicles the founding of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit in the late '70s, really drove home the idea that just because someone seems nice doesn’t mean they’re not capable of evil.

Though Mindhunter only ran for a couple of seasons, it was fascinating. If you're a fan of that show, you’ll want to check out The Psychology of a Murderer True Crime Tour, coming to Evansville.
