The Best Deal in Town

Picture it… it’s 1986. You are shopping at Costco with your family, and you are famished. Kids are fussing. Your spouse is grouchy. You need something to eat if you are going to get into the car with this bunch of heathens. You saunter up to the lunch counter and order the hot dog combo for each person in your family.

For only $1.50, you get a quarter-pound, all-beef hot dog served on a soft bun with classic condiments and a drink. Excellent value. You have only put yourself behind about $6 for meals for four people.

A Deal That Refused to Change

The iconic Costco hot dog and soda combo has cost $1.50 since its introduction in 1984, a price maintained for over four decades as a nod to customer loyalty. Originally sold from a food cart, the deal became a staple of the food court.

Now, fast forward to 2026. Same scenario. You are shopping at Costco and get the munchies. You walk up expecting reality to finally have caught up with inflation.

And there it is again. Four decades later.

$1.50

Between 1986 and 2026, inflation has increased by over 200%, meaning $100 in 1986 has the same purchasing power as approximately $301.29 today. But the Costco hot dog combo has stayed exactly the same. According to wikipedia, As of 2018, Costco sold a yearly average of 135 million hot dogs, more than every Major League Baseball stadium combined.

The Costco hot dog combo is in such high demand that in 2008, the company began producing hot dogs in their own factories to reduce supply chain costs.

The “Big Change” Everyone Is Talking About

There is a trending topic online about changes Costco is making to the hot dog combo. In a world where everything changes, and it is rarely for the benefit of the consumer, you probably assumed they finally announced a price increase.

But nope.

It is still $1.50.

The only change is that you can now choose a Kirkland bottled water instead of a fountain drink.

So really, same deal, just an extra option.

In 2022, Costco CFO Richard Galanti said the company planned to keep the hot dog combo price at $1.50 “forever.” His successor, Gary Millerchip, later reinforced that message in May 2024, saying the price is “safe.” No price increase, no shrinkflation, no hidden catch in the bun.

Okay, One Small Catch

The only caveat is that you need a Costco membership. Again, this hasn't changed. You've always needed one to get that sweet hot dog deal.  But fun fact, in the state of Indiana, you do not need a Costco membership to buy alcohol. You just have to be over 21 and show a valid ID.
