Winter Is Hard for Many and This Reminder Could Save a Life
As we brace for another cold Midwest winter, the holidays are also settling in around us. For many, this time of year brings joy, celebration, and tradition.
Winter Can Intensify Emotional Struggles
For others, it brings something much heavier. Shorter days, freezing temperatures, financial pressure, loneliness, family strain, and the weight of New Year’s expectations can make this season incredibly hard.
A Personal Story of Survival and Hope
I know that struggle well. Thirteen years ago, I was battling active alcoholism, and I attempted to take my own life. While I am grateful every day that I'm still here and that I was able to get and stay sober, I know that even now, when the temperatures fall and the days get shorter, the heaviness of the world tries to creep back in. Winter has a way of magnifying everything we carry.
The Reality Behind the Statistics
And it is not just personal experience. The numbers are heartbreaking. According to The Happiness Project, the world has lost more than 800,000 people to suicide this year. Every forty seconds, a life ends this way. That is not a statistic that should ever feel normal.
If you are struggling, or someone you love is struggling, please hear me clearly. You are not a burden. You are not behind. You are not failing because you cannot summon holiday cheer or because the new year feels overwhelming. You deserve to stay. And real help exists.

You Are Not Alone in This Season
The winter months can be unforgiving, but you do not have to go through them alone. If you are hurting, reach out to someone. If you know someone who goes quiet this time of year, check in.
Sometimes a moment of connection can interrupt a spiral. Sometimes hearing “I’m glad you’re here” makes all the difference.
