Entrance to Evansville’s Wesselman Park will Close – Here’s How to Get There
Wesselman Park entrance will be closed for construction, but don't panic! You can still visit, you just have to take an alternate route to get there. Keep reading to learn more.
A Dangerous Exit
If you have ever visited Wesselman Park, Wesselman Woods, or Wesselman Nature Center, you know just how dangerous it can be when it's time to leave, and you are trying to exit the property. There's even a sign that prohibits left turns from the park onto Boeke Road because of the risk involved.
Construction Is Coming
The good news is that problem will soon be remedied. The bad news is that it does require construction, so for the immediate future, the entrance to Wesselman Park will be closed beginning on Monday. Now, before you panic, the park itself is not closing.
Wesselman Park Will Remain Open
Let me say that again, Wesselman Park will not be closing. They are just closing the entrance. Of course, you're probably wondering how you're going to get there if the entrance is closed.
Alternate Route to Wesselman Park #1
You can still access Wesselman Park from Boeke using the access road that runs between the Wesselman Park softball fields and Swonder Ice Arena. As Joe Atkinson, Communications Director for Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry's Office explains, you should avoid turning directly into the Swonder parking lot because, "that won't get you there." Use the road between the softball fields and the ice arena to access the newly built feeder road that will take you straight to Wesselman Park.
Alternate Route to Wesselman Park #2
Coming from Evansville's Lloyd Expressway? You can get to Wesselman Park from there too. Just take the Lloyd to Van Avenue, then turn left onto Division Street. For those familiar, it's the same route you would have taken to visit the old Roberts Stadium back in the day. Division Street will meet the newly built connector road, and you can take it all the way to the park.
See Video Explaining the Alternate Routes to the Park
If you're unclear on how the temporary access will work for Wesselman Park, you can watch the video below shared by Evansville Mayor Terry's Office. The construction on the entrance is expected to be finished by mid-September.
