Water Safety Matters as Summer Swimming Season Begins
As pools open up and families start heading to lakes, rivers, and beaches for the summer, the Warrick County Health Department is reminding everyone that water safety needs to stay top of mind.
While summer water days create some of the best memories, accidents can happen frighteningly fast and often far more quietly than people expect.

Drowning Remains a Serious Risk for Children
According to the health department:
- Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 4
- An average of 10 people die from unintentional drowning every day
- More than half of fatal and nonfatal drownings among people aged 15 and younger happen in natural or open water
If you've ever supervised kids around a pool, you already know how quickly your attention can get pulled in ten different directions at once.
That's why officials stress constant supervision anytime children are near water.
Water Safety Starts Before Anyone Gets in the Pool
The health department says some of the most important safety habits are also the simplest:
- Never swim alone
- Keep close watch over children
- Wear life jackets when appropriate
- Learn emergency preparedness and CPR
- Use barriers and alarms around pools
- Build water competency skills
Officials also remind families that lakes, rivers, and beaches come with additional risks beyond what people typically experience in swimming pools, including currents, changing depths, debris, and reduced visibility.
Summer Water Days Should End with Everyone Going Home Safely
I think most people understand water safety theory, but it's easy to become more relaxed once summer fun kicks in.
Kids are laughing, music is playing, people are grilling, and everybody is trying to enjoy the day.
That's also exactly when distractions happen.
The Warrick County Health Department says staying alert around water can save lives and encourages families to approach every swimming trip with a little extra awareness this summer.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple: Make memories that last for all the right reasons.
