A cold front moving into the region tonight could bring scattered showers and thunderstorms, including the potential for a few storms to become severe before the risk tapers off overnight.

When Storms Are Expected To Develop Tonight

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky, storms are expected to develop this evening and continue through midnight. While not everyone will see severe weather, the Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the region under a marginal risk. This means isolated severe storms are possible.

What A Marginal Severe Risk Means For The Region

The biggest concerns with this system include strong, gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Some storms could produce wind gusts capable of causing minor damage. Additionally, rainfall totals could exceed half an inch in some areas. Localized flooding is a possibility during heavier downpours, especially in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.

Main Weather Threats With This Storm System

The National Weather Service says the overall severe threat should gradually diminish after midnight as the cold front moves through and storms weaken. However, breezy conditions could linger even outside of thunderstorms, with wind gusts reaching between 30 and 40 miles per hour at times.

Which Areas Should Stay Weather Aware

Residents in the Evansville area, Henderson, and surrounding communities are encouraged to stay weather aware this evening. While the risk level is on the lower end, even marginal storms can still produce brief but impactful conditions.

This system is also part of a larger pattern shift, as colder air filters into the region behind the front. Temperatures are expected to drop after the front passes, marking a noticeable change from recent milder conditions.

How To Stay Safe During Evening Storms

As always, it is a good idea to secure loose outdoor items, have a way to receive weather alerts overnight, and always avoid driving through flooded roadways. Heavy rain can quickly overwhelm drainage systems, and water depth is often difficult to judge in the dark. "Don't drown. Turn around."

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if the threat level changes. For now, officials say the main window for stronger storms will be during the evening hours, with quieter weather expected later tonight.

Staying informed and prepared can help ensure a safe night as this cold front moves through the Tri-State.
