The Ultimate Coast-to-Coast Road Trip Takes You Through Indiana and Illinois
Spanning 3,365 miles across the United States is US Route 20, the longest road in the country, and it takes you through Indiana and Illinois.
What is a Road Trip?
For many folks, a road trip is a means to an end, it's the way you travel to get to your vacation destination. Here in the Midwest, we love to take a road trip to our vacation destination. Why fly somewhere when it's only a 10-hour drive away? However, for some folks, the destination is the road trip in itself.
The All-American Road Trip
There is something uniquely American about a road trip. I think this may partially have to do with the fact that many other places have public transit that will take them long distances. Like you can hop on a train in Europe and take it to another country. We don't have trains to take us to other states in the U.S. So we hit the road to get where we need to go, and many have found joy in that. My husband and I often talk about getting a camper, and one day taking a huge trip across the U.S. hitting up campgrounds along the way, and I think that would be a blast!
Just look at the way Route 66 has become a cultural icon that people still travel along to this day. Route 66 is known for being the main example of a "great American road trip." There are also places like the Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway or the Pacific Coast Highway. These roads are known for being scenic roads that people travel on, just for the experience of travelling along them. But what's the longest road trip to take in the country? Well, if you want to travel along just one road, you'll want to hit up U.S. Route 20.
What is the Longest Road in the U.S.?
The longest road in the United States is US Route 20. According to Historic US 20, the road starts at Kenmore Square in Boston, Massachusetts, and ends at US 101 in Newport, Oregon, totalling 3,365 miles across the northern part of the United States.
There's a whole website dedicated to US Route 20, and according to Historic US 20, the road goes through the following states:
- Massachusetts - 154 miles
- New York - 376 miles
- Pennsylvania - 47 miles
- Ohio - 259 miles
- Indiana - 154 miles
- Illinois - 196 miles
- Iowa - 333 miles
- Nebraska - 440 miles
- Wyoming - 525 miles
- Montana - 12 miles
- Idaho - 418 miles
- Oregon - 451 miles
Heck of a road trip, right? You can literally go coast to coast, and there's a 92 mile stretch through Yellowstone you can even add on to your trip if 3,365 miles isn't quite enough for you!
