The average weekly grocery cost is significantly higher in Kentucky than in Indiana, and the numbers may surprise you.

I don't know about you, but one of my least favorite things to do as an adult is to go grocery shopping. It costs so much to get so little nowadays. I'm sure you'll agree that when you go to the checkout to purchase your groceries, you are always shocked by the fact that you spent a whole lot of money, even though your cart isn't even half full. Oh, and don't even get me started on the price of groceries in a full cart. I mean, have you seen the price of beef nowadays?

World Atlas just shared an interesting breakdown of grocery costs per state. The U.S. states with the highest average weekly grocery bills are Hawaii ($333.88) and Alaska ($328.71). Given the fact that those states aren't among the continental United States, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that groceries are more expensive there, given the imports.

When it comes to Indiana and Kentucky, neither state was near the top of the list of the most expensive. However, I was surprised to find the difference in the grocery costs per week between the two states.

Kentucky Grocery Bills Much Higher Than Indiana’s

You'd think that bordering states like Indiana and Kentucky would have grocery prices pretty similar. That being said, I know several people here in southern Indiana who will take a little bit of extra time to go to Kentucky to fill their tank up full of gas because it's typically cheaper. So, you'd think that if grocery prices aren't about the same between the two states, Kentucky would have cheaper groceries. That's not the case.

According to World Atlas, the weekly average grocery bill for Indiana residents is $239. Meanwhile, Kentuckians face a weekly average grocery bill of $255. That's a $16 difference. While that doesn't seem like much, the difference adds up over a year's time. Indiana also happens to fall within the top five cheapest states when it comes to weekly grocery bills. Are you as surprised as I am?

Now, Kentuckians and Hoosiers might not agree with the fact that we have some of the lowest grocery prices in the country, because it still costs a lot to buy groceries compared to even a few years prior. However, compared to other states, we've got it good. You can take a full look at this report by clicking here.
