Are These Good Candidates for an ‘Official’ Indiana State Film?
If Indiana had an official state film, there are several titles that would certainly be a great fit when it comes to culture and values. We ranked the top eight based on responses from folks in the state, and when it came to No. 1, there was a clear winner.
Over the years, several movies have showcased Indiana's sights and stories, often focusing on its rural nature and love of sports. While these films are great, I can't help but imagine there are films that could take place here outside of the sports genre. It's certainly time for some more variety. For now, though, we have a library of classics that make excellent candidates for an official state film.
Indiana Has Several Emblems and Symbols
Recently, I was reflecting on the many state symbols we have here in the Hoosier State—beyond just our flag, seal, and motto. While many of these symbols have garnered attention over the years, none have been related to film, which I believe is an art form deserving of recognition. Below, you can see some of the official symbols of the Hoosier State as of 2025.
- Indiana State Flower – Peony
- Indiana State Tree – Tulip Tree
- Indiana State Stone – Salem Limestone
- Indiana State Song – "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away," by Paul Dresser
- Indiana State Poem – Indiana, by Arthur Franklin Mapes
Discovering the Best State Film for Indiana
As a fun experiment, I decided to do some crowd sourcing to see which specific movie folks in Indiana would like to see as an "official" state film (if such a designation existed). There were actually more responses than I had anticipated, and I’m a little embarrassed to admit I haven't seen all of the titles. Below, you can see them ranked from the least popular candidate to the most popular candidate.
