Indiana's Haunt of the Year

Every year Indiana Haunted Houses hosts the Haunt of the Year contest, this contest is voted on by haunted house fans from all across Indiana to find the best in the state.   The last haunted house that was named the best in the state, was in 2023, when The Haunted Jail in Columbia City was crowned the champion.

The Haunted Jail

The Haunted Jail being named Indiana's Haunt of the Year in 2023, isn't the only accolade this classic haunt has gotten.  It's been around for more than 30 years and over the years has won many notable awards including being named the 5th best in the country by USA Today.

According to The Haunted Jail's website, the haunt has been open since 1991, and is located in a building constructed in 1875.  So this is definitely a haunted house where history, meets contemporary.  And don't worry, they change up their haunt often enough that it's a new adventure every year, here is what they have to say about this year's haunt:

Experience a completely redesigned haunt this season that is more intense and filled with new twists and terror! Your epic, bone chilling trip through the Haunted Jail will give you a never before seen perspective. Deimos Nosferato has been the Soulkeeper for centuries and has awakened his clan of creatures from the underworld…because it’s time to feed. Many have tried to end Deimos and his blood thirsty family and all have failed.

The Haunted Jail is officially open for the 2024 haunt season, and if you're interested in checking them out, you can find all of the information, here.   Keep an eye on Indiana Haunted Houses to find out who will be crowned this year's Haunt of the Year!

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
