I don’t know about you, but I’m absolutely loving this warm November weather. Yeah, yeah, I know—it’s a clear sign of global warming and all the polar bears are struggling because the planet’s heating up and staying warm longer. But honestly? I hate cold weather, so I’d be perfectly happy living somewhere warm like this year-round.

Well, except for Christmas Day. Snow is cool on that day—and that day only.

When I was a kid, I don't remember ever having a Thanksgiving warm enough to wear shorts. But now? It seems like that’s becoming the new normal. It’s comfortably warm through most of December these days. Of course, if you're someone who loves snow and cold, you might be in for a treat. Some meteorologists are predicting an Arctic blast could be heading our way, bringing icy air, snow, and possibly even severe weather. So, bundle up—just in case!

INDIANAPOLIS METEOROLOGIST MATT STANDRIDGE

Indianapolis meteorologist Matt Standridge posted the following to Facebook on Nov. 10.

About 9-10 days from now, there is a growing chance for a taste of winter air. November has been easy and warm in the Midwest. That may change. Too early to know exact temperatures or rain and snow chances. But don’t be surprised for a good dose of cold air before Thanksgiving. Eventually the cold air will win as winter approaches. In the meantime, the coming week looks above average for Indiana with 50s and 60s. The weather hasn’t been too bad this Fall so far.

MIDWEST WEATHER

Midwest Weather, a weather page in the Cedar Valley predicted that snow could hit parts of the US that have been enjoying warm weather.
We are now in the 7- to 10-day period of a potential winter storm. This winter storm will come with the Arctic front, so even though it doesn't seem possible with how warm it is now, it will certainly be cold enough the week of the 18th. An arctic front is still expected to move between the 17th and 19th of November, bringing a big pattern change through the rest of November. The trough will begin near Alaska and dive south toward CA before pushing northeast into the region during the 7-10 day period. A ton of cold air will be pulled in so snow is increasingly likely. Significant lake-effect snow will be possible with a very strong northwest flow. We are to far out to know more details but there'll be daily updates with personal map posts starting tomorrow.

We are still watching a potential winter storm for the middle of next week that will affect a large portion of the region. The first wave of precipitation will be rain but an arctic front will move in next Wednesday where snowfall potential exists in the blue circle. A more southeast track (slower trough) would bring accumulating snow across the southeast half of the shaded area but a further northwest track (more progressive trough) would put the snow on the northwest half of the shaded area. However, confidence is increasing in wrap-around precipitation taking place so there could be snow for areas that see all rain at first. We won't know the likely scenario (track) for a couple days yet. Arctic air will come in behind it no matter what. Stay tuned for more updates!

OHIO VALLEY WEATHER WATCH

Snow is all good and fine but those in Southern Indiana and Illinois and Western Kentucky is severe weather when the warm and cold air combines. According to Ohio Valley Weather Watch in Evansville,

Yes a pattern change is on the way to the Ohio Valley and will feature November-type weather finally showing up! The graphics shown (GEFS Ensemble) are for the period November 21-24. High temperatures across the region falling to the middle and upper 40s. This will likely finally bring a freeze to the areas that have not yet experienced one. This is the same system that we have been telling you about, which will feature a variety of weather with it, including the potential for severe weather on the warm side in Dixie and possibly as far north as the Ohio Valley. We will keep you updated!

For now, we can just go on enjoying our nice warm weather. I looked for a forecast from the National Weather Service but unfortunately, they only go through seven days. So, nothing there. And this system might turn out to be nothing. But just to be on the safe side, it's best to prepare now!
