Illinois Skyrockets to 6th in Nation for Rapes & Homicides?
It could be argued that rape and murder are the worst types of violent crime. That's why it's extremely troubling that the most recent crime data that's just been released suddenly shows Illinois zooming up to 6th in the nation for both of these awful offenses.
There are a lot of different ways to read data. I saw this new ranking from World Population Review showing crime rate by state for 2025. If you dive deeper into the numbers they shared, that's when problems begin for Illinois. The last full year of crime data shows that Illinois ranks 6th overall in their breakdown for total crimes.
Illinois ranks 6th in America for both rapes and homicides
- Illinois rape count - 5,336
- Illinois homicide count - 823
For what it's worth, Illinois ranks 4th for the number of robberies now.
It's not all bad news for Illinois
The crime rate for every 100,000 people ranks Illinois 29th in America. Illinois ranks 7th for the number of non-violent crimes. Not that any crime is good, but better non-violent than the alternative.
This new data from World Population Review is interesting since most crime breakdowns I see are based on nearly irrelevant 2019 FBI crime numbers.
Hopefully we'll see 2024 full year crime data soon so we can see if Illinois is trending up or down.
