We all have driven down the roadway in Indiana and spotted a personalized or vanity license plate. Sometimes they're easy to decipher, other times it takes saying out loud and trying to pronounce it a few different ways to figure out what exactly the message the person behind the wheel is trying to convey. My family and I always turn license plates like that into a fun little game on road trips. I think that whole thing stemmed from the movie Jeepers Creepers, but we all know how well it turned out for them!

Anyway, when it comes to customized license plates, some can be clever, others can simply state what they do for a living or their general attitude toward life. However, the best personal license plates are ones that make you laugh out loud. The truth is, there are a lot of personal license plate ideas that never see the light of day. Why? Because they were rejected by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Why the BMV Might Deny a License Plate Application

The Indiana BMV can deny a personalized license plate for a number of reasons. Here's what the website says:

The BMV may refuse to issue a PLP containing a combination of letters or numbers, or both, if the following apply:

• Carries a meaning or connotation offensive to good taste and decency;
• Would be misleading; or
• The BMV otherwise considers improper for issuance.

Indiana BMV Rejected License Plates in 2025

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles released its list of rejected personalized license plates that were submitted between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 18, 2025. Since the start of the year, over 700 personalized license plate requests have been denied by the BMV. Ranging from online slang and political statements to outright slurs and profanity, the list includes humorous and ridiculous requests for custom plates. Oddly enough, a good chunk of the rejected plates this year, according to Fox 59, had to do with narcotics. I'm not sure who thought those would ever fly. However, there were a lot of other rejected license plates that stood out. Let's take a look at some of those!
